Collaboration with Imax Will Make Customized Alexa 65 the Standard Bearer for Large-Format 2D Cinematography
ARRI arrived in Las Vegas to make an impressive case for the Alexa 65, the 6.5K large-sensor camera it first announced last September. The Alexa 65, available exclusively through ARRI Rental, may be a niche item, but it's coming out of the gate pretty fast, with about a dozen cameras in the field.
What are those cameras shooting? One of them was used on The Revenant, the latest collaboration between the Oscar-winning duo of Alejandro González Iñárritu and Emmanuel Lubezki. Two of them are on an Oliver Stone project code-named Sacha, about Edward Snowden, with DP Anthony Dod Mantle, ASC, BSC, DFF. A series of Halo 5 spots by director Rupert Sanders features the first publicly released Alexa 65 footage. And the new Zhang Yimou film The Great Wall, shot by Stuart Dryburgh, ASC, used three Alexa 65s.
And the shoot for Captain America 3: Civil War is starting in Atlanta with four to seven Alexa 65s on hand, ARRI said.
Moreover, the Alexa 65 will be the basis of a new technical collaboration between ARRI and Imax, The plan over the next several months is for the two companies to create a customized version of the Alexa 65 that will be the next-generation 2D digital camera for Imax.
