Red Digital Cinema said that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be the first feature film to shoot with the Red Weapon 8K digital cinema camera.
"The large sensor size and super high resolution offered by the new Weapon 8K, combined with its lightweight and compact size, open up a whole range of new creative possibilities," said Guardians 2 executive producer Nik Korda in a prepared statement. Korda oversaw the use of earlier-generation Red cameras in his production roles on Prometheus and The Legend of Tarzan.
The Marvel superhero sequel, to be shot by Henry Braham, BSC (The Golden Compass, The Legend of Tarzan), and directed by Guardians Vol. 1 director James Gunn, is scheduled for release in May 2017. The original Guardians cinematographer, Ben Davis, is busy shooting Doctor Strange.
The Guardians news follows word last year that a new 2D digital camera developed by Imax and ARRI is being used to shoot the next two Avengers films, as well as certain scenes in Captain America: Civil War, coming in May.
