Rarely are cutting-edge computer graphics techniques as amazing and frightening — simultaneously! — as this technology for generating talking-head video, with perfect lip sync, from an audio file alone. Consider, for instance, what it could mean for the cottage industry of “fake news” generators. How much more difficult does it become to tell fact from fiction if, someday, online trolls have video tools that can put words in anybody’s mouth, as long as they have a generous supply of reference video footage to generate a kind of lip-sync library? Naturally, the technique will be featured in a presentation at SIGGRAPH 2017.
