Codex is now shipping its digital recording system, supporting uncompressed 4K, two channels of 4:4:4 HD (one recording to each of two hot-swappable DiskPacks), or one channel of HD at up to 60 fps. Each DiskPack is really a RAID — with a front-panel display showing details of its contents — and footage can be mirrored as it’s captured, allowing one set of DiskPacks to be sent to post while the other set is kept as insurance against disaster. The recorder’s built-in LUTs mean footage can be viewed in the proper color space, or color-calibrated HD dailies can be made, on set. And the netShadow feature puts footage on a network immediately, handling format conversions on demand — meaning you’re not locked into using the same box, or the same format, throughout the post process. For good measure, a DVD burner can be built into the system — with full password protection — but that’s an option that may make some security-conscious users squeamish. Codex configures the system as a straightahead media recorder, an on-set production server, or a media transfer station.
