Hewlett-Packard announced today that it will offer a new workstation, the entry-level xw4400 featuring the Intel’s next generation Core 2 Duo processors. It will be unveiled at SIGGRAPH and available August 7.
For under $1,000, the xw4400 comes loaded with Microsoft Windows 32-bit or x64 and has a wide range of graphics, memory and storage options, including new serial-attached SCSI hard drives. The workstation also will be Windows Vista Capable at launch and will offer Red Hat Enterprise Linux later this fall. It has 4MB of L2 cache (versus the 2MB per core with the Pentium D processor) enabling more efficient use of the CPU. Comparing performance with the Core 2 Duo processor, the 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo processor costs the same as the 3.6 GHz Pentium D processor but offers up to a 70 percent increase in performance depending on the application.
In addition to the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, the HP xw4400 is also available with the second generation Pentium D processor providing excellent performance (with 2 MB on the L2 cache per core) at a low price.

Additional features include up to 8 GB total memory capacity along with 64-bit Extension Technology, which provides support for enormous virtual memory addressing and the capability to run 64-bit operating systems and applications. The xw4400 also includes several features to help keep data safe, including a lockable chassis, chassis intrusion detection and cable lock features.
