First Data Tape System Designed for File-based Workflows Now Available as an Automated Solution

For broadcasters and video professionals addressing the explosion of high definition (HD) programming and digital content, Quantum's SDLT 600A and SuperLoader 3A both feature a tape-based file system, gigabit Ethernet connectivity and MXF-aware capabilities which are catalysts for the migration to an end-to-end file-based workflow. These scaleable archive solutions offer 300 GB to 4.8 TB of removable networked storage.
Leveraging the SDLT 600A tape drive technology and its position as the number one supplier of autoloaders, Quantum designed the SuperLoader 3A for workflows with larger storage requirements. For example, regional news bureaus can use this solution to create a localized archive where content can be easily managed, quickly accessed and readily exchanged between locations.
The SuperLoader 3A can support one or two magazines, which each hold eight data cartridges, for up to 4.8 TB of storage in a 2U rackmount form factor. Individual tape cartridges can be loaded or removed from the front “mail” slot, or complete magazines can be removed for bulk loading, unloading or shelf-storage.
Quantum’s SDLT 600A stand-alone tape drive, introduced earlier this year in North America, is an ideal solution for editing, content exchange and archiving for both post production and workgroups. The SDLT 600A can be integrated into file-based acquisition workflows, such as Panasonic’s P2 camera workflow, enabling content from a P2 card to be offloaded to the
SDLT 600A drive so the card can be quickly reused.
With built-in Gigabit Ethernet capability, the SDLT 600A and SuperLoader 3A are also network-attached, permitting direct access by every workstation and server on the network. Being MXF-aware enables video tape-like access to subclips by timecode, fast access to metadata stored on the tape and an unprecedented level of interoperability between applications and environments.
“Quantum’s SDLT 600A provides unparalleled flexibility to edit, exchange and store content for a complete end-to-end file-based workflow,” said Denis Grison, technical manager for ARTE France. “By supporting file-based acquisition and storage, eliminating re-ingest and supporting every compression format, it enhances productivity while reducing costs.”
Super DLTtape II Data Cartridge
The SDLT 600A and SuperLoader 3A use Super DLTtape £ II cartridges, a standard IT data cartridge, which offer 300 GB of capacity and are designed to hold more than six hours of HD content recorded at 100 Mb/sec. A single Super DLTtape II cartridge can accommodate more than 25 hours of DV25 content (a common form of digital reduction and compression employed in digital camcorders), with faster-than-real-time transfer rates of up to 288 Mb/sec.
The cartridges carry their own file system directory, allowing direct drag and drop access by applications on the network without the need for other software. Secure yet accessible, each tape is designed to have a robust 30-year archival life that ensures the longevity of critical video content while allowing tapes to be easily moved between libraries, stand-alone drives and even facilities.
Pricing and Availability
The SDLT 600A is available now in North America and Europe and the SuperLoader 3A is scheduled to be available in North America and Europe at the end of September through Quantum’s select geographical resellers that target the broadcast and professional video market. The MSRP for the SDLT 600A tabletop unit is $7,950; the rackmount unit is priced at $8,550; and the SuperLoader 3A autoloader sells for $12,000. For more information, please visit
