Quiet Man has been using Poser for our animation work since the program came out, probably 10 years ago. Back then, it was a simple program that created simple models of people-akin to animating mannequins. It continues to be an easy-to-use program that lets artists animate and render characters. It can create animals, different textures, better rendering, hair and cloth.
To build, texture and rig a model, it would cost about $40K, with all the man and machine hours. For example, we worked on GE’s “Tower,” which was nominated for an Annie. This spot didn’t have the same budget as another GE spot we worked on, called “Singin’ in the Rain.” So we did a test to prove to them that we could produce the same quality of work at a fraction of the cost. About five of the animals in “Tower” were created in Poser. The others were animals shot in green screen.
With Poser, we were able to offer the client two very different prices: $40K to build one character from start to finish, or no more than 75 per character. Poser simplifies the process for us as well. There are a lot of animals and characters already built in, ready to go. This means there are no special effects or the capability to create a creature from start to finish with Poser, which can save time and cost, depending on the project.
