Abekas - yes, that Abekas - is Back in Business with New Products for HD Production.

Junaid Sheikh, a veteran of the professional equipment manufacturing industry, started a new company in October 2005 with an old familiar name, Abekas. The name should be familiar to anyone working with digital disk recorders (DDR) when the all-digital, tapeless devices first appeared in the mid-80s.
Sheikh and his partner Phil Bennett own the new Abekas. They were also co-founders of the original Abekas in 1982. Sheikh co-founded Accom in 1988, and in 1998 Accom acquired Scitex Digital video, which consisted of Abekas and Immix.

Accom closed its doors in June 2005. As part of Accom's chapter 11 process, Abekas acquired substantially all of Accom's assets including technology, product rights and intellectual property. Besides buying Accom's assets, however, the new Abekas has no relationship with Accom.

Today Abekas has a dozen employees in Menlo Park, CA, and continues to service and support all of the old Abekas, Accom and Immix products. Abekas is also fully engaged in designing and selling products. The company now sells four HD products: the Dveous/MX DVE, the Axial/MX linear editor, the AirCleaner profanity-delay box and the ClipStoreMXc DDR. Sheikh said the company is also busy making new products that will be announced soon.

Abekas recently sold 15 ClipStoreMXc units to the Mobile TV Group for its entire HD truck fleet. The ClipStores are being used to play video/key/audio graphics and transitions during live sports broadcasts.
