Red Giant claims Colorista provides better-looking results with simpler controls than the three-way corrections built-in most editing applications.

The indie film world first took notice of Magic Bullet technology at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival, after the screening of four original digital video shorts from The Orphanage, a California-based visual-effects house founded by three veterans of Industrial Light + Magic.
In 2002, the custom software used on those films was released to the public and immediately became a popular process to transform the crisp, realistic look of video to the softer, more organic look of film.
Red Giant Software, based in Fort Wayne, IN, has worked with various software writers to develop and distribute high-end visual effects tools. One of those collaborations was with Stu Maschwitz, CTO and co-founder of The Orphanage, for the Magic Bullet technology.
The latest fruit from their partnership is Magic Bullet Colorista, a new $199 color-correction plug-in that supports Apple’s Final Cut Pro (FX Plug) and Motion, Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro, and Avid AVX-compatible systems.
Red Giant said the most frequent request from Magic Bullet users was for an easy-to-use color correction tool that could be applied before processing for the Magic Bullet “look.” The company claims Colorista provides better-looking results with simpler controls than the three-way corrections built into most editing applications.
Colorista features controls for modifying shadows, midtones and highlights. Familiar lift, gamma, and gain color wheels allow for adjustment of color balance and luminance with ultra-sensitive control for precise results. Saturation and exposure options allow the tweaking of flesh tones.
The software’s DeepColor RT engine enables real-time processing for quick review and render of both HD and SD media. The RT engine preserves quality in every application host so that 10-bit projects remain 10-bit.
Color-correction can be applied only where it’s needed. The user can create a circular or rectangular shape to isolate a specific zone with no pre-masking.
