I picked this little blurb from yourHTN.com up off Slashdot.

Will 2008 be the year we can finally drop our expensive cable bills? It’s sure looking like it with Joost constantly adding content, ABC announcing it will stream shows in HD, and media boxes such as the Apple TV becoming popular. Television networks finally seem willing and ready to distribute their shows on the web, and hardware manufactures are finally making easy-to-use media boxes that will bring the web to the living room.

All that sounds great, but those of us old enough to remember the breakup of Ma Bell in the mid-1980s also remember how long it took for mainstream Americans to switch to MCI or Sprint. The fact is that consumer habits are hard to change – even when the switching costs and technical complexity of the switch are very low.

While it may be true that IPTV is primed for prime time, I don’t see Mr. and Mrs. J.Q. Public cutting the cable anytime soon. These systems still require a basic understanding of 802.11 networking, and study after study by the likes of Forrester and Jupiter say that people are not comfortable with setting up wifi.

Long after the technology is viable (it’s not, Joost still looks much uglier than SD over cable) and the content is there (still a long ways off), there will have to be a massive push to educate consumers. 2013 seems like a more reasonable prediction for the wide adoption of IPTV.
