2D Animator Bryan Cobonpue of Manic steps up to answer Five Questions.
1. What are you working on today?
A Mel Gibson produced mini-series opening title sequence called Carrier.
2. What have you found is the best tool or innovation that has come out in the last year?
The Playstation 3. Amazing graphics for games and Bluray is a great high definition format for viewing movies.
3. The project (film, television, commercial or music video) that most impressed you in the last year? Why?
The Superman Returns opening title sequence, designed by Kyle Cooper. It was a great homage and update to R/Greenberg & Associate’s opening titles of Superman: The Movie. There is a sense of continuity from the 1977 film utilizing the same technique in bringing in the titles and with the use of current visual effects, computer graphics and dynamics, the whole look and feel, that was not possible 30 years ago, is now realized thus bringing it to a new level.
4. The best or favorite project that you worked on in the past year? And why?
Holedigger Films’ “Do You Sleep In The Nude?”, a Rex Reed documentary. The project is still a work in progress and being able to create a design, like Saul Bass did decades ago, is refreshing to the senses. Visual effects are at the very minimum and recreating the 1960s Pop Art style is rare in film and TV these days. Being able to conceptualize and execute without the dependency of visual effects feels very human and retroactive to a style where computers did not exist.
5. Name the top 4 artists on your iPod?
Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party
The Beatles
Dave Gahan
Erlend Oye
