It was announced today that G-Technology has been acquired by some company called Fabrik. My first thought .. who knew G-Tech was for sale!? Most everyone knows of G-Technology as a manufacturer and provider of premium hard drives and storage solutions. I’ve been using their drives for years and have recommended them many times. I still have one of the early G-RAIDs and it hums along every day. I see that G-Technology has it’s roots in another storage company Medea. Medea is now owned by Avid. The musical chairs continue. Medea also was an even earlier provider of RAID storage for video editing that came in at an early affordable price. And after G-Technology came on the scene they proved themselves to be reliable, innovative and there for support after the sale. And they did this with a dedicated focus to the post-production industry though they did sell to anybody.
Then they get bought by Fabrik. This scares me. Let me first say that I really don’t know anything about Fabrik. But as I’ve been reading around the press releases and coverage of this purchase I see tons of talk about “venture capital” and “revenue run rate” and “key verticals” … basically all of that MBA talk that I really don’t care anything about. All I care about is reliable storage technology at good prices to make my business work. And as I read all of this I got that uneasy feeling. It’s the kind of feeling I get when one of my favorite locally, successfully and individually owned restaurants gets bought out by a big corporate conglomerate. They see a business that makes money and has a great niche in the market so they buy it up and swear nothing will change and they will only make it better but inevitably the quality and service goes down until the corporation either sells it, changes it or they close it. Basically they ruin it for all those patrons who supported it in the first place. That’s the feeling I got while reading about this Fabrik purchase. I mean … the Fabrik website even has another division that already sells storage. It doesn’t look as good at the G-Tech stuff but hey, overlapping product means someone has to go. I just hope they don’t sell it, change it or close it. Long live G-Tech!
