At an NAB conference dominated by green screens and HD-branded equipment, browsing through camera support gear, the stuff with its own legs to stand on, can be a refreshing mind-clearer. Manfrotto’s release of 100% carbon tube tripods, the MPRO series, represents one of the many subtle, yet meaningful, innovations in an equipment area where practicality and sturdiness are prized. Will Holowka, the Manfrotto product manager at Bogen Imaging, shared why the MPRO series is well-adapted for shooters, particularly those involved in ENG applications. First, its light weight (the heaviest model weighs in at 7.7lbs) makes it ultra-portable. Then, the lack of spreaders and quick flip leg lever locks makes setting up and taking down a quick task.
He also emphasizes, what could be the key to successful camera support: practicality over flare. "When we make a weight limit, we’re typically conservative. It’s not just about how light [a piece of equipment] is. Performance comes first."
What does the future hold for Manfrotto? According to Will, "revamping sticks and further exploration on improving smaller heads." One can look forward to seeing more careful, practical innovation from this and other camera support companies, who don’t need to be flashy to stand out.
