Pro8mm Pitches HD-Scanning and Blu-ray Services for Small-Gauge Cinematography
If you’re reading a newsletter called HD Studio, shooting with a Super 8 camera may be the last thing on your mind. The folks at Pro8mm in Burbank understand that, but they’d like to get your attention anyway. In order to promote its new Cintel Millennium II telecine, Pro8 is offering a free roll of Super 8 film and processing to anyone who spends $108 to have Super 8 footage prepped, cleaned, scanned and output to Blu-ray Disc.
Alternately, you can spend $108 to enter Pro 8's Think Big Shoot Small Film Festival, which accepts submissions through May 1. The requirement is that you shoot your short film on a single roll of Pro8mm film, making all edits in camera. Pro8mm processes the film, color-corrects, and scans it on the MMII for encoding to Blu-ray. Screenings will take place in June at a Los Angeles venue to be determined, and every entrant gets a Blu-ray copy of their film to keep.
Finally, Pro8 has a HD demo Blu-ray Disc that you can check out in exchange for a refundable $20 deposit. It's definitely old technology – but if you're keeping an eye out for a different kind of HD look for a music video or unusual narrative project, it could be worth checking out.
