A long time ago, we linked to a useful tool called MediaMover that was a helper application for moving and managing Avid media files. Almost 2 years later here’s a link to that app’s sibling: MediaMover FCP.

We all know that Final Cut Pro’s media management isn’t its strongest feature. It allows you to throw media files pretty much anywhere on any drive. But unlike Avid you can have easily identifiable clip names since FCP doesn’t require a specific storage regiment for media. That can really scatter the media around a system. MediaMover FCP can help with the management, moving and backup of these media files. From the Random Video website:

  • Easily see how much storage space every project is using regardless of the number of volumes media is stored on or number of editors that have contributed to them.
  • Storage costs money! Tracking the time projects are on your system and how much space they occupy allows you to accurately invoice projects for the storage space they use.
  • Use MediaMover’s Export tool to create Excel compatible reports to track your Final Cut Pro media.
Backup any project’s media with ease.
  • Delete a project’s media quickly and thoroughly, regardless of how fragmented or deeply nested it is.
  • Handles multiple capture and render folders associated with the same project easily.
  • At a glance, see the largest and oldest projects on your system.
  • Familiar OS X style interface.
  • Compatible with all versions of Final Cut Pro and XSAN software.

I have always really liked the fuel gauge-type overview that MediaMover can give over a particular hard drive:

This is a version 1 product and on my demo there’s nothing under the File menu so this may be a bug or just part of what is missing in the demo version. It also looks to rely on Final Cut Pro’s Capture Scratch folder naming convention to do its media locating so if you set up your media captures / transcodes into directories that aren’t named Capture Scratch somewhere in the directory structure then definitely work with the demo before purchase to be sure it meets your needs.

The cost of MediaMover FCP looks to be $150, same as the Avid version. I didn’t see a price listed on the website but you can purchase the app from the application’s Help menu. Give MediaMover FCP a try and you too might be able to take control of your Final Cut Pro media!
