Digital Cinema Lab Provides Digital Mastering and DI Services for Budget-Minded Producers
Color Mill, Utah’s first digital cinema lab providing color correction, digital intermediates, Red file-based workflow, Digital Cinema Mastering and Media Deliverables, has launched here. The facility is focused on all phases of Red and RAW-based production workflow. From on-set digital dailies and color grading to media deliverables including digital cinema packages and file-to-film transfer print masters, Color Mill delivers convenient one-stop solutions throughout the entire production chain.
“Color Mill offers affordable digital mastering and DI services custom tailored for budget producers,” according to David Cummins, head of post production. “We understand the entire digital process and have the tools and knowledge to prepare content for distribution and the experience to deliver on time and on budget.”
Whether a project is shot on Red, film or HD, Color Mill creates a Digital Cinema Distribution Master (DCDM) from which “digital cinema prints” can be easily copied and inexpensively distributed for one time screenings or for large theatrical releases in all digital cinema theaters.
A 20-year industry veteran, Cummins previously founded West Post Digital, a film and television postproduction facility in Santa Monica. As president and CFO, he was instrumental in building the first high definition boutique in Los Angeles that became one of the industry’s fastest growing companies. He then went on to pursue a consulting practice helping independent media facilities and film and television producers achieve cost efficiencies by adopting new digital production technologies and methods. After relocating last year to Salt Lake to head up Color Mill, Cummins joined the Advisory Board as a technology consultant for the Salt Lake Film Society.
“The services offered by Color Mill are essential to the growing needs of filmmakers shooting in Utah,” said Marshall Moore, director of FilmUtah. “Their professional staff, along with the latest technology, add to an outstanding post production infrastructure that continues to make Utah competitive for any type of production.”
Color Mill is a signatory to Utah’s Motion Picture Incentive Fund, a post-production performance rebate that provides a rebate of 20% on an approved production of $1,000,000 or more. The maximum benefit for each production is $500,000.
