Get, one of the hit post-production products from this year’s NAB show, is scheduled to to hit the net for purchase and download on Friday August 6.
What exactly is get and how will it aid the searching of footage in Final Cut Pro? Get is a phonetic search tool from AV3 Software that will index all your footage on a hard drive and then allow you to search for specific words or phrases from within the get interface. It’s powered by technology from Nexidia, which you might recognize as the technology behind Avid’s ScriptSync. From there, you can send those search results back to Final Cut Pro in a variety of ways. When I saw the demo at NAB, I have to say, I was quite impressed. Who might benefit most from this technology? The documentary editor comes to mind, but I can think of a lot of situations where I would have loved to had this little tool sitting in my tool-chest. There’s a lot more about get after the jump.
Pricing for get is set at $499, and three languages will be available at launch: North American English, United Kingdom English, and Latin American Spanish. Obviously, there’s room to add many more languages and you can even vote for languages you’d like to see on the get website (though at the time of this writing that link appears to be broken). There’s also going to be a 10-day-trial version available, which is a must for this type of software — skeptics will download the demo just to make sure it really works as the developer claims. In the demo that I saw, it seemed to work well. How well will it be able to index interviews with noisy backgrounds, heavy accents and bad enunciation? Or with people talking over one another? That remains to be seen, but that’s what the demo is for!
Here’s all you need to know, via three YouTube videos that the company placed online, one for each of the three stages of using get.
