Hasn’t everyone, at some point or other, wanted to shoot cool video footage featuring a hero character who’s part-human and part-robot? Sure they have! The problem is, the actor will complain if you tear his arm open and, anyway, he probably doesn’t have any of that cool sci-fi machinery going on underneath his skin, anyway. That’s where desktop VFX come in.
After Effects power user Mathias Möhl has launched mamoworld.com, a new web site collecting AE tools and tutorials. Happily for users learning the ropes of tracking and compositing with AE, Möhl’s tutorials are all free to view — if you get some good out of them and want to throw him some coin, check out his collection of AE scripts, which are available for download on a pay-as-you-wish basis.
Out of the tutorials posted to date, my favorite by far is “Cyborg Arm,” which shows you the robotic undergirdings of Möhl’s forearm, then takes you through the techniques he uses to depict that flesh wound and the advanced machinery peeking out underneath. Not too bad. Watch it below.
