Along the same lines as the recent useful tool Clip Info Titler is another option that can achieve a similar result: TCR Plus from Spherico.
Like Clip Info Titler, TCR Plus uses Final Cut Pro’s super handy XML export and import capabilities to add a filter to clips in a sequence that can display a lot of useful information about the clip.
TCR Plus works by adding the TCR Plus filter (after installation it will be located in the Effects > Video Filters > Video folder) to the first clip in a sequence full of clips to which you want to add clip data. When you export an XML, the standalone application component of TCR Plus looks at the XML data and saves that XML to be imported back into FCP. All the clips in that sequence will then have a text filter applied that reflects the chosen info about each individual clip. You can choose to display a lot of different data:
I’ve found that it’s very handy to be able to display text from several of the note-taking FCP bin columns on a clip. For example:
You can make clip notes in a bin column, such as Master Comment 1. When you select that note as the Plus Item in the TCR Plus filter settings that Master Comment data will be displayed on each clip:
Given all the different FCP bin columns that you can make notes in, this tool gives you plenty of options.
The application isn’t perfect, however. For starters, there’s no way to label a new XML export sequence. And once you open your exported XML, TCR Plus application does its job and then overwrites the XML you just opened. I always prefer the option of naming and saving an XML I import in and out of FCP. When importing the TCR Plus’d XML back into FCP, you’ll notice that it keeps the same name. I ended up with two sequences with the same name in the project at that point. It would be better if the program automatically gave that newly created sequence a unique name. Even better if I could name it myself.
TCR Plus comes to us from Spherico, a German company. These guys have long made quite a lot of handy tools that any FCP editor would be wise to investigate. I used to use Spherico’s rotateClips application back when I used a 35mm lens adapter. TCR Plus is available as a demo that will work for 20 clips. A serial number can be purchased via PayPal for 45 Euros.
