Apple Rolls Out 27-inch Display, New MacBooks and Mac Mini with Thunderbolt Ports

Today Apple announced that its latest 27-inch Cinema Display, renamed “Apple Thunderbolt Display,” will come equipped with a Thunderbolt port. New MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac Mini models released by the company today will also feature Thunderbolt ports.
Thunderbolt technology, which Apple co-developed with Intel, adds two bidirectional channels of 10-Gbps throughput to and from your screen. The new displays also feature three USB 2.0 ports, FireWire 80, Gb Ethernet and a second Thunderbolt port if you want to daisy chain more than one. There’s also an embedded FaceTime HD camera and mic, if you’re worried what Microsoft might do to Skype.

Not much else has changed from the Cinema Display’s previous incarnation. This new model still offers a 2560 x 1440 resolution, 1,000:1 contrast ratio and a 12 ms response time. The price is also the same at $999, but expect 6 – 8 weeks for delivery if ordering online.

Thunderbolt brings an added boost to the under-three-pound Mini, which Apple claims is now twice as fast as its former version. The new Mini, listing for $599, also includes an HDMI port and HDMI-to-DVI adapter.
