Summit Entertainment announced today that it will sue the person it believes leaked photos and video from the final, “Part 1” Harry Potter-style installment of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, set for release this November. Following an investigation across several continents, the studio is now not just “extremely heartbroken,” as it claimed in a public letter earlier this year, but getting even.
Is this just good publicity or a long overdue action against a viral mentality run amok? Summit seems to be playing both sides by protecting its assets but also standing by its fans. In a statement, Summit executive vice president David C. Friedman said, “It is not fair to the majority of fans that want to see the final chapter of the Twilight Saga film franchise fully realized by the filmmaker and dedicated cast and crew to have these images out and available on the Internet.”
This isn’t the first time a studio has investigated suspected leaks, though most don’t do it as loudly as Summit is doing now. Should more studios — and others with a stake in the content — slap lawsuits on hackers who feed the Internet beast with illegally obtained video?
