Birns & Sawyer just updated its inexpensive clamp-on, trayless matte box design. The new MB-114 (starting at $775), building on the original design by B&S owner William Meurer and lens technician Stacy Strode, holds 4×5.65 filters and comes in two-stage and three-stage versions with eyebrow included. It’s a fit for 114mm lenses out of the box and comes with step-down rings for 100mm, 105mm, 95mm and 80mm diameter lenses. B&S says it works with a wide range of pro lenses: “most Angenieux Zooms; Canon PL Zooms; Zeiss superspeeds, ultra primes, master primes and compact primes; Cooke S-4 primes; Illumina S35 primes; Leica Summilux C primes; Schneider Cine Xenar primes and most other lenses.”
