Moneyball and War Horse Fare Well, Extremely Loud Sneaks into Best Pic

Defying some expectations that awards powerhouse The Artist might dominate the proceedings, director Martin Scorsese’s Hugo earned the most nominations of any film honored by the Oscars this morning, nabbing a spot in categories including Best Picture, Directing, Cinematography, Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects. Could it become the first 3D film to win Best Picture? The silent-film phenom The Artist came in right behind it with 10 nominations – hobbled in the race, perhaps, by not having the opportunity to compete in those sound categories. Tied for third place were Moneyball and War Horse, each of which earned six nominations, including Best Picture.

The biggest surprise of the morning was a spot for Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close among the nine Best Picture nominees. (It received only two nominations total, including one for supporting actor Max Von Sydow, leaving director Stephen Daldry out in the cold.) Some had expected the wild card in the Best Picture race to be The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (especially following that film’s success with Guild award noms) or Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Critical fave and commercial success The Descendants got only five nominations, despite being considered a front-runner in the race. And Midnight in Paris, a well-liked comeback and genuine box-office hit for writer/director Woody Allen, managed only three nominations, including one for Best Picture.

But chief among Oscar snubs may be the lack of a nomination for Pixar’s Cars 2 this year. Voters opted for two off-Hollywood titles (A Cat in Paris and Chico & Rita), along with the expected Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots, and Rango, rather than give Pixar the honor.

In the major craft categories, newcomers jockeyed for position with familiar names. In cinematography, newcomer Guillaums Schiffman (The Artist) stood with second-time nominee Jeff Cronenweth (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) alongside Robert Richardson (Hugo), Emmanuel Lubezki (The Tree of Life), and Janusz Kaminski (War Horse). The Artist‘s Anne-Sophie Bion and Michel Hazanavicius joined three-time Eddie nominee Kevin Tent (The Descendants) and two-time Eddie nominee Christopher Tellefsen (Moneyball) with Oscar veterans Thelma Schoonmaker (Hugo), who has six nominations and three statuettes already, and Dragon Tattoo team Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall, who won for The Social Network last year.

Last year, Inception was the only Best Picture nominee to also be named in the visual-effects category. This year, Hugo fits that description. Other VFX films that made the cut were Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Real Steel, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

The winners will be announced February 26. A complete list of nominations follows below.
