UPDATE 03/14/12: Weisscam tells us the first T-CAMs will ship in the third quarter of 2012 at a price somewhere between the RED Epic and the ARRI Alexa. We asked for a little bit more information about output options, and were told that the T-CAM will output de-Bayered (4:2:2 or 4:4:4) HD-SDI or 3G-SDI signals that can be recorded by any unit that handles standard SDI output. Raw data can also be mapped in the SDI stream. Weisscam's recording unit is still in the development stages, but the company says its raw mapping system can be implemented on other recorders.

After two years of development and demonstrations, Weisscam said it plans to launch the new SOHA camera platform for its high-speed T-CAM at NAB. The T-CAM is a new small-form-factor camera from Weisscam that uses SOHA, a modular hardware design approach, to allow users to upgrade their cameras as new sensor technology becomes available (a la the Red One MX), or to swap out different sensors as appropriate for different jobs.

Weisscam said the T-CAM shoots at up to 350fps and is rated at ASA 600 with an impressive 12 stops of dynamic range. The camera's design accommodates a 2/3-inch sensor board as well as Super 16 and Super 35 versions with resolution of up to 4K. (Presumably the 2/3-inch sensor will be available first, with others to follow.)

"We always wanted to develop a platform that outlasts the short product cycles that are current within the industry," said company CEO Stefan Weiss in a prepared statement.

The camera's interface outputs 10-bit HD or 12-bit raw footage at up to 1,200 MB/second for capture by industry-standard data recorders. Weisscam is also working on its own HD+RAW recorder, which it demonstrated alongside a T-CAM prototype at last year's NAB, along with a data pack, docking station, and electronic viewfinder. The data recorder will be able to record raw footage as well as other image formats from Weisscam and other camera manufacturers, the company said.

No announcement yet on price or availability.
