If you're one for learning about this crazy world we call post-production and, more specifically, visual effects, then you're probably familiar with FXPHD and fxguide. They are a great resource for all things VFX, including online classes, blogs, podcasts and trade show coverage. Many things they offer cost money while many of them are free. Add a brand new e-book into the free category.
If you've got yourself an iPad with iBooks 2 then you can enjoy this rather in-depth look at the making of the FXPHD short film Moving Day. The iPad-specific requirement probably comes from this e-book being created in Apple's relatively new iBooks Author application. It sure is a nice showcase of what you can do with a well designed e-book. There are many different elements within the book besides text, including lots of video, a number of effects build examples, storyboards and ton of photos. It's a testament to the fxguide commitment to educating the up-and-comers. They could probably have charged a few bucks for this e-book and made a bit of money. I think we can all say thanks to them for making it free.
All the video embedded in the e-book makes for a hefty 1.4 GB download, so be sure you've got a good connection before grabbing it from the iBookstore (iTunes link). Even though the videos are small, they look good and there are a lot of them (hence the size of the download). If you want even more Moving Day, keep an eye toward the FXPHD classes as they used the Moving Day short as a teaching tool and are still offering some of the Moving Day classes in the fxphd Vault Courses.
