The Criterion Collection, which today releases a boxed set of movies directed by the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist (and so much more) Norman Mailer, says this fight footage from Maidstone was unstaged — captured on film when co-star Rip Torn attacked Mailer with a hammer (!) while cameras were rolling.
