In 1993, cinematographer Harris Savides crafted a futuristic, overexposed look influenced by Japanese fashion imagery for this Madonna video directed by Mark Romanek. The results, partly inspired by a commercial directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino for Yves Saint Laurent, pushed the boundaries of telecine work at the time. Here's what Romanek said about working with Savides:
Up until [I met Harris Savides], all the DPs I worked with were only interested in making things look "good." But Harris was interested in this ineffable thing that made an image poetic or soulful, even if it meant the image had to look "bad." But, of course, it's a good type of bad, if you know what I mean. It was real beauty, not fake beauty. This was a revelation to me."
