You may be familiar with the story of Festival Express, a summer 1970 concert tour that saw bands traveling from city to Canadian city (Toronto, Winnipeg, and Calgary) via a chartered train rather than a tour bus. Footage acquired during the Festival Express tour — which involved The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, Delaney and Bonnie, and many more artists — was the basis for a 2003 documentary film of the same title.
Now Historic Films, a stock footage archive located on the North Fork of Long Island, is offering more than 120 hours of footage shot during the original tour, including material that has never seen the light of day.
Among the reels of film, the company says, is footage of Janis Joplin performing "Me and Bobby McGee" on acoustic guitar — according to Historic Films, it's the only existing footage of Joplin on guitar. Joplin's recording of that song would hit #1 on the single chart after her death, which came just a few months after the Festival Express tour.
You can browse the footage at the Historic Films website. Viewing most of the clips requires signing up for a pro account. For more information on the collection, email info@historicfilms.com.
