Latest Release Adds User LUTs, Center-Scan Mode for Super 16 Glass, S-Log3 and S-Gamut3
Sony celebrated the holiday season with a big firmware release for the PMW-F5 and -F55 cameras. New features enabled in v3.0 include user LUTs and look profiles, a center-scan mode for shooters using Super-16mm lenses, and the new S-Log3 and S-Gamut3 shooting options.
Sony also updated the firmware for the AXS-R5 raw recorder to v3.0, adding a 2K raw high-frame-rate recording format, raw playback through the F5 and F55 outputs, user-definable clip naming, and an easier firmware update process for standalone R5 units.
Sony didin't provide a lot of immediate detail on S-Log3 or S-Gamut3,Cine, promising a whitepaper release in early January to explain their intended use. "S-Gamut3.Cine is DCI-P3," Sony's Peter Crithary said in a post yesterday at the company's community forum. "S-Log3 is a log signal with 1300% dynamic range, close to Cineon Log curve. This does not replace S-Log2 [and] S-Gamut3. It is added as another choice."
Finally, Sony announced the next version upgrade for the F5 and F55, which is scheduled for March 2014. It will enable cache recording on both cameras (preliminary specs are 15 seconds of MPEG HD 23.98 PsF, 8 seconds of XAVC HD at 23.98PsF, and two seconds of XAVC 4K at 23.98PsF on the F55 only) interval or time-lapse recording (originally slated for v3.0 but delayed), and 4K 60p/60p over HDMI 2.0 on the F55.
