Vimeo has added a few more services to its platform, including options for subtitling and translation, that it hopes will help its Vimeo Pro and Vimeo On Demand customers get a bigger return from their content worldwide.
Vimeo is partnering with the Amara captioning and subtitling platform to offer everything from a free DIY caption and subtitle creator to paid services, including audio transcription and translation. The tools are available to all Vimeo users, not just those on the pro tier, under the advanced video settings menu, and are priced by the minute.
The fee for subtitling an English language video currently starts at $3.95/minute for "full-service" captioning at Amara's best quality, with an additional per-minute charge for translation that ranges from $11.20 to $13.45, depending on the language. "Standard-quality" English-language subtitles can be had for as little as $1.70/minute
Also this week, Vimeo has begun allowing content creators to accept payment for Video on Demand purchases in Euros, in addition currency from the U.S., Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Japan, Russia, Switzerland, Taiwan, Sweden, and Denmark. It also launched a dedicated Japanese-language localization of the site alongside the English, French, German and Spanish versions.
"The launch of Japanese language on the site kicks off an aggressive road map we have to be fully localized in select territories in 2015," said Vimeo President Dae Mellencamp in a prepared statement. "Given Japan's vibrant pool of creators, this is an important territory for us and we're looking forward to the creative output our efforts will have with this endemic community."
