New 1TB SSD Drive Can Hold Two and a Half Hours of 4K
Convergent Design announced the Odyssey7Q+, a new OLED monitor and recorder that accepts 4K, UHD, and 1080p60 video via HDMI for recording in Apple ProRes 422 HQ.
The company said the 7Q+ will replace the original Odyssey7Q, which is no longer being manufactured or sold, though Convergent will continue to support it. Originally released in November 2013, the 7Q is unique in that added features (including ARRIRAW, Sony FS700, and Canon C500 recording options) can be purchased or rented on a daily basis.
Owners of the 7Q who buy the 7Q+ by March 31, 2015, are being offered a "loyalty program" that includes a one-year warranty extension on the 7Q, duplication of any purchased recording options on the new 7Q+ at no extra cost, and a $500 credit for purchases of recording options, warranty extensions, and any other offerings at the Convergent Design website. Either the 7Q or the 7Q+ can be sold to a third party with purchased recording options intact, Convergent said.
The Convergent Design Odyssey7Q+ lists for $2,295. The company said it expects to begin shipping the unit "on or around" December 19.
In other product news from Convergent Design, the company has begun shipping the 1TB Odyssey SSD ($1,395), a cost-effective alternative to its 256GB and 512GB SSDs. The new drive size will be enabled on the Odyssey7, Odyssey7Q and Odyssey7Q+ with the next Odyssey firmware update, scheduled for release when the 7Q+ ships.
The company said the 1TB drive will hold two and a half hours of 4K ProRes footage, or 11 hours of 1080p ProRes. WIth the 7Q and 7Q+ both supporting two connected drives, a dual-SSD set-up should allow up to five hours of continuous 4K or 22 hours of continuous 1080p capture.
