American Horror Story, Mad Men, and Transparent Make Strong Showings
HBO proved that Game of Thrones is as popular inside the industry as it is with home viewers, logging no fewer than 24 Primetime Emmy nominations in today's announcement. Game of Thrones is known for its brutal violence, large-scale action, and defiance of audience expectations, and Emmy voters honored its scope and rigor in multiple categories, including Outstanding Drama Series. GoT dominated in cinematography, earning four nominations (out of a total of seven) in that category alone, and won two nominations in both directing and editing categories.
See our blog for our picks of the best stuff that didn't make the cut—but should have.
The other major multiple honorees in today's nominations include Fox's American Horror Story: Freak Show, which earned 19, followed by AMC's Mad Men and Amazon's Transparent, each of which received 11. The recognition for Transparent gives a shot in the arm to Amazon, which is aiming to compete with Netflix on quality streaming programming.
But HBO remains the clear leader in terms of prestige, especially when it comes to documentaries. Look no further than the category honoring directors of nonfiction programming, where five different HBO productions are in competition with one another.
There are two many Emmy categories to list them all on one page, but we've listed some of the big ones below, including categories honoring cinematography and creative editing. For a complete list of nominees in every category, visit the offical Emmys site.
