Following exceptional growth in the U.K., SMPTE has created the new SMPTE U.K. Region.
Membership in the U.K. Section of SMPTE exceeded the 500-member mark in 2015, making it eligible to petition for the creation of an official SMPTE Region, which gets representation on the SMPTE Board of Governors.
Dalet Chief Media Scientist Bruce Devlin has been appointed as the new Region's first governor. He had previously been elected as governor for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Central and South America, a Region that will now be governed by Siegfried Foessel, head of Moving Picture Technologies at Fraunhofer IIS.
"The widespread support for the SMPTE U.K. Section and its work, evident in rapidly increasing attendance at meetings across the U.K., reflects the growth occurring across the Society as a whole, said SMPTE Membership Vice President William C. Miller in a prepared statement. SMPTE's worldiwde membership has grown to more than 6400, Miller said.
