Panasonic Teases New VariCam

Product Launch Set for February 10 at DGA Theater

Panasonic is getting a head start on NAB 2016, planning the reveal of the next camera in its VariCam line for a February 10 event at the DGA Theater Complex in Los Angeles.

In an email to press, the company described an upcoming "major product announcement." That was followed by promotional emails inviting users to the event and promising, "Mobile cinema acquisition is about to change … forever."

Predicting what Panasonic has under that sheet has become a guessing game on the Internet, with speculation centering on a less-expensive alternative to the existing VariCam 35. The main question seems to be how much less expensive — will it be a competitor to the Alexa Mini or the Sony F5?
