The force was with ILM at the Visual Effects Society Awards this week. The team from ILM — Roger Guyett, Luke O'Byrne, Patrick Tubach and Paul Kavanagh — along with the film's special effects supervisor, Chris Corbould, shared the VES Award for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Star Wars earned three more awards at the Tuesday night ceremony. Yanick Dusseault, Mike Wood, Justin van der Lek and Quentin Marmier won Outstanding Created Environment in a Photoreal Feature for the "Falcon Chase/Graveyard" section of the film; Paul Kavanagh, Colin Benoit, Susumu Yukuhiro and Greg Walter received the Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a Photoreal Project award for the same sequence; and Joshua Lee, Matthew Denton, Landis Fields and Cyrus Jam won Oustanding Models in a Photoreal or Animated Project for their work on the droid sensation known as BB-8.
Meanwhile, Game of Thrones slashed its way to four awards. Joe Baurer, Steve Kullback, Eric Carney, Derek Spears and Stuart Brisdon shared the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode award for "The Dance of Dragons" and Dominic Piche, Christine Leclerc, Patrice Poissant and Thomas Montminy-Brodeur won Outstanding Created Environment in an Episode, Commercial or Real-Time Project. The epic "Hardhome" episode was honored twice — David Ramos, Antonio Lado, Piotr Weiss, and Félix Bergés won for Outstanding Effects Simulations in an Episode, Commercial or Real-Time Project, while Eduardo Diaz, Gillermo Orbe, Oscar Perea and Inmaculada Nadela shared Outstanding Compositing in a Photoreal Episode.
And Pixar made a strong showing with three awards for its film The Good Dinosaur. Sanjay Bakshi, Denise Ream, Michael Venturini and Jon Reisch won Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature; David Munier, Matthew Webb, Matt Kuruc and Tom Miller got Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature; and Stephen Marshall, Magnus Wrenninge, Michael Hall and Hemagiri Arumugam earned the award for Outstanding Effects Simulations in an Animated Feature.
