Deck Supports 4K Capture, Playback at Up to 60p; New Hardware to Encode H.265 in Real Time
Blackmagic Design upgraded its UltraStudio capture/playback system with the NAB announcement of the UltraStudio 4K Extreme, which bumps it up to Thunderbolt 3.
The company said Thunderbolt 3 has the throughput — max 40 Gb/sec — to support 12-bit RGB and high-frame-rate video, while a new hardware encoder inside the deck will encode to H.265 in real time for online distribution of UHD content. It supports 4K capture and playback at up to 60p and 3D capture and playback via 12G-SDI and HDMI 2.0.

As usual, the UltraStudio includes a broad array of IO connections on the back, from 12G-SDI and fiber expansion cages to balanced XLR audio, analog component and composite video, and RS-422 control inputs.
The new UltraStudio 4K Extreme Thunderbolt 3 is slated to ship in May for an MSRP of $2,995.
