Divorced from their feature-film context, these horror-movie jump scares from 1959's House on Haunted Hill to 2013's The Conjuring aren't as scary as they should be. Still, it's interesting to see what kind of directorial and editorial techniques reliably bring the shocks. Or watch them with the volume down and note how much of a difference sound design makes when you're trying to put a fright into your audience.
