HBO and FX dominated the 2016 Creative Arts Emmy Awards this weekend. In a presentation broken into two ceremonies held over two nights, HBO won a total of 16 Emmys — including nine for its flagship series Game of Thrones, which won in categories ranging from casting, costumes and makeup to VFX and production design. FX programs that earned plaudits included The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (picture editing, sound mixing, casting and hairstyling), American Horror Story: Hotel (makeup and costumes), and Fargo (cinematography, sound editing).
Other programs earning three or more awards included Grease: Live (Fox) and Making a Murderer (Netflix), with four each, and the documentary film Cartel Land (A&E) with three. (See our interview with Cartel Land director Matt Heineman for more.)
Emmy-winning cinematographers included John Simmons, ASC, for multi-camera series Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn "Go Hollywood"(Nickelodeon), Dana Gonzales, ASC, for limited series Fargo "Waiting for Dutch" (FX), and James Hawkinson for single-camera series The Man in the High Castle "The New World" (Amazon).
Winning picture editors included Kabir Akhtar, ACE, for simgle-camera comedy series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend "Josh Just Happens to Live Here!" (CW), Tim Porter, ACE, for single-camera drama series Game of Thrones "Battle of the Bastards" (HBO), C. Chi-Yoon Chung for single-camera limited series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story "The Race Card" (FX) and Peter Chakos for comedy series The Big Bang Theory "The Opening Night Excitation" (CBS).
Sound editing awards went to the teams behind series Black Sails "XX" (Starz) and limited series Fargo "The Castle" (FX), while sound mixing awards went to the teams on one-hour series Game of Thrones "Battle of the Bastards" (HBO), half-hour series Mozart in the Jungle "Nothing Resonates Like Rhinoceros Foreskin" (Amazon), and limited series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story "From the Ashes of Tragedy."
