Cord-Cutters Can Turn to Twitter for Live News on Election Night
Cord-cutters and mobile mavens will have a new way to get the news this election night, as BuzzFeed is set to offer coverage via Twitter live streaming. BuzzFeed's Twitter program will be executive-produced by Bruce Perlmutter (late of CNN, MSNBC, Fox Broadcasting and E! Networks). The number of people looking for video coverage on Twitter is not insignificant — Variety reports that the October 9 presidential debate had 3.2 million unique viewers, with an average-per-minute audience of 369,000. Disney Production Company Fined Almost $2 Million Over Harrison Ford Injury
Disney-owned Foodles Production Ltd. has been ordered to pay a $2 million fine relating to the Star Wars: The Force Awakens on-set accident that prosecutors say could have killed Harrison Ford. The hydraulic door is said to have hit the actor on set with the force of a small car, breaking two bones in Ford's left leg. The judge said the company's worst transgression was its failure to communicate effectively with the actor, who did not realize the set was live at the time of the incident. [The Guardian]
Did Tilda Swinton Secure the Chinese Release of Doctor Strange?
The filmmakers behind Doctor Strange were accused of "whitewashing" the story when word got out that the character of the Ancient One — described in the comics as coming from a village in the Himalayas — was being played as a Celtic woman by the not-at-all-Himalayan Tilda Swinton. At the time, co-screenwriter C. Robert Cargill suggested the move was partly meant to defuse any concerns that China might see the inclusion of a Tibetan character as a political statement. (The New York Times summary of the issues involved is worth a read.) Whatever the motivation, the Chinese government seems to approve of the end product — the film will get a Chinese release, uncut. Cop Show Shoot Disrupted by Gunfire
On-location shooting for NBC's NY-set cop drama Shades of Blue was reportedly disrupted last night by, well, on-location shooting. Nobody was hurt and details are sketchy, but shots were apparently fired and the real police were called to the scene in Brooklyn's Beford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. [Deadline]
McDonald's Is Putting Ronald on Ice Amid National Wave of Creepy-Clown Sightings
It's hard to keep a good clown down, but we'll be seeing less of Ronald McDonald for a while. McDonald's said its signature red-headed mascot will lay low for a while thanks to the current rash of spooky clown-related incidents nationwide. [Associated Press]
Reduce DSLR Noise with This Chill-Out Mod for the Nikon D5500
Will tiny refrigeration units be the next cool gizmo for still photographers? PrismaLuceLab has released the D5500a Cooled — a Nikon D5500 DSLR with a big ol' cooler hanging off the back of the camera to keep the temperature of the sensor down during long-exposure photos, reducing noise in the image. The idea is to get cleaner pictures of the night sky; sample images seem to show that it's effective. [Petapixel]
