Almost as notable as the films that received recognition in today's Golden Globe nominations are the ones that didn't.
Martin Scorsese's lauded passion project Silence? Ignored. Clint Eastwood's rousing portrait-of-an-American-hero Sully? Shut out. Sundance smash (and double award-winner) The Birth of a Nation? Dead on arrival.
Andrew Garfield in Hacksaw Ridge
Globes plaudits landed instead in some unexpected places. Oscar front-runner La La Land will compete in the musical/comedy category with superhero upstart Deadpool — that film's nomination is probably the biggest surprise in the Globes slate. And nobody could be happier than director Mel Gibson, who is looking to bust out of movie jail this year. His Hacksaw Ridge scored nominations for director, actor Andrew Garfield (pictured, above), and Best Motion Picture.
But the Globes didn't really upset the narrative heading into awards season, with the widely acclaimed musical La La Land and drama Moonlight earning seven and six nominations, respectively, to lead the pack. Manchester by the Sea was in third place with five. Those three films are also expected to do well when Oscar nominations comes out next month.
On the television side, Globes voters stuck their necks out to endorse several shows in their debut season — including The Crown, Stranger Things (both Netflix), Westworld (HBO), Atlanta (FX), and This Is Us (NBC) — a gesture that may give those programs a welcome boost among audiences planning their next binge session(s).
