Editorial excellence across a broad range of narrative styles has been recognized this year by the American Cinema Editors, which today announced a slate of award nominees that run the gamut from intricate science fiction (The Arrival) and fantasy (Game of Thrones) storytelling to emotional epics (Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight), ebullient movie musicals (La La Land, Hail, Caesar!) and even an R-rated superhero yarn (Deadpool).
This year's feature-film line-up is surprisingly low-budget, In a departure from the norm, only one studio tentpole (Disney's The Jungle Book, which cost a reported $175 million) was among the 10 feature films nominated for best-edited drama or comedy. None of the others, from Deadpool on down, cost more than $60 million.
In the Animated Feature Film category, Laika's Kubo and the Two Strings (also a relatively low-budget affair, as animation goes these days) is challenging two Disney blockbusters, Moana and Zootopia.
The television categories were led by Better Call Saul, which earned three nominations (including two for Skip Macdonald, ACE) in the same category, Best Edited One-Hour Series – Commercial. Veep, Stranger Things and Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown earned two nominations each.
Last week, ACE announced that J.J. Abrams would recive the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award. Previous recipients include Frank Marshall, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Norman Jewison, Alexander Payne, James Cameron, Nancy Meyers, Clint Eastwood, and George Lucas.
Ballots will be mailed this Friday, January 6, with a voting deadline of January 17. Judging for the television and documentary categories takes place January 15 at Blue Ribbon screenings for special committees of ACE members in advance of the awards ceremony, set for January 27 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
