If you've ever screened films made by independent and avant-garde filmmakers — think Stan Brakhage, Bruce Baillie, James Broughton and Phil Solomon — odds are they were on loan from Canyon Cinema, a film archive run in the spirit of an artists' coop. Founded by filmmakers in 1967, the original company was dissolved and reestablished in 2014 as a nonprofit. This year, it's launching the Canyon Cinema 50 initiative, making new prints and digitizing works (but only when the filmmakers agree) in the collection.
