Jay-Z and co-director Mark Romanek (“99 Problems”) take on racist caricatures from American culture — especially early Hollywood animation — repurposing them to populate the first video from the rapper’s latest album, 4:44. On Instagram, Romanek posted a behind-the-scenes clip of the animators at work; Anonymous Content, The Mill, and animation production company Titmouse were all involved with the production. Meanwhile, Cartoon Brew investigated the historical sources for the images.
