Shinichirō Watanabe, best-known for directing anime series Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, was recruited by Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve to translate the Asia-inflected world of Blade Runner into anime for the third in a series of three short film prequels covering events that take place after the 2019 setting of the original film, but before the new one begins.
