The Hollywood Professional Association announced nominees in the 2017 HPA Awards creative categories recognizing achievements in editing, sound, VFX and color-grading for features, television programming and commercials.

As you’d expect, the feature-film nominees don’t exactly line up with the Oscars or the Emmys, partly because the eligibility dates are out of whack (works must have been released between September 7, 2016 through September 5, 2017 to qualify for the HPAs), but also because the HPA often takes a more careful look at the artistry that goes into films and TV programs that are commonly dismissed by Academy voters.  You may not have heard of The Ivory Game, a late-2016 documentary about the illegal ivory trade, but it’s here in contention alongside awards favorites Hidden FiguresLion, and Dunkirk for Outstanding Editing honors.

For the most part, the HPA spread the wealth around, but there are a number of repeat performers on the list. Notably, colorists at Company 3 swept the category recognizing Outstanding Color Grading for commercials with five out of five nominations. Tom Poole is in competition with himself in this category, a status he shares with a couple of feature film colorists at Technicolor Hollywood — Steven J. Scott, nominated for grading both The Birth of a Nation and Doctor Strange, and Michael Hatzer, recognized for Ghost in the Shell and Fences. And there may be four commercials contending for Outstanding Editing, but only two editors have been nominated — Chris Franklin at Big Sky Edit, for both Nespresso “Comin’ Home” and Optum “Heroes,” and Doobie White at Therapy Studios for Bonafont “Choices” and SEAT “Moments.”

White shows up again on the roster for Outstanding Sound in a commercial, again for SEAT “Moments.” The same category features two nominations for Factory’s Anthony Moore: one for Virgin Media “This Is Fibre” and another for Rio 2016 Paralympic Games “We’re the Superhumans.” And Formosa Group sound effects editor Mark Stoeckinger is nominated for feature films Fate of the Furious and John Wick: Chapter 2, while dialogue editor Tiffany Griffith at Technicolor is in contention for episodes of Stranger Things and American Gods.

The HPA Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place November 16 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. The full list of HPA Award nominees as provided by HPA follows below.
