Red Giant released Universe 2.2 — along with a new short film showcase for Universe tools written and directed by Aharon Rabinowitz, which is our Video of the Day — with 11 new transition tools, updates to two existing plug-ins, and new support for Avid Media Composer.
The marquee effect this time around is probably the Retrograde Transition, which incorporates scanned pieces of 8mm or 16mm film into a transition that mimics the look of a film strip slipping out of the projector gate. Also noteworthy is a VHS Transition that mimics glitchy VHS tapes that have been recorded and re-recorded, as well as the time-saving, mostly self-explanatory, Flicker Cut and Camera Shake Transition.
The VHS plug-in gets new noise samples, overlays and presets, and the Retrograde plug-in gets the option that maintains the original aspect ratio of your footage.
Red Giant can do a better job of showing you what these new tools do. Watch the promo video, below, for a preview.
Red Giant Universe is available by subscription for $99/year ($49.50 for academic licenses) or $20/month.
