The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) got in under the wire today, making some noise with its slate of nominees for the 65th MPSE Golden Reel Awards just before the Oscar nominations are announced tomorrow morning.

Game of Thrones is an awards juggernaut in just about any competition where its eligible, and the Golden Reels are no exception — “Beyond the Wall” has been nominated for music/musical editing in a shortform episode, while episode “The Spoils of War” is nominated for dialogue/ADR work as well as effects/Foley.

Plenty of less widely honored TV shows are in the running, too, including “Red Tent” from HBO’s unheralded anthology series Room 104 (Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Live Action Under 30:00), “The Dark End of the Street” from USA Network’s Stephen Hunter adaptation, Shooter (Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Episodic Short Form – Effects/Foley), and the mind-blowing eighth episode of Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival (Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Episodic Short Form – Music/Musical).

As far as individuals go, our count indicates that the most-nominated sound pros in this year’s Golden Reels are Foley artists John Roesch, MPSE, and Shelley Roden, MPSE, who are up for no fewer than five different awards honoring their work as a team on Despicable Me 3FerdinandDunkirkThor: Ragnarok, and Carne Y Arena.

Director Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, Detroit) will receive the 2018 MPSE Filmmaker Award, and sound designer and sound recordist John P. Fasal (Top Gun, Transformers, Dunkirk) is getting the 2018 MPSE Career Achievement Award.

The MPSE’s 23 categories recognize sound-editing work in feature film, television, animation, computer entertainment and student venues. The award-winners will be named at a ceremony set to take place Sunday, February 18, at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites in downtown Los Angeles. Tickets to the event are available online.
