Disney Closes Down Disneytoon Studios

Disney is shuttering Disneytoon Studios, the Walt Disney Animation Studios division dedicated to creating inexpensive derivatives of A-list Disney franchises, including direct-to-video titles like Tinker Bell and theatrical releases including the Cars spin-off Planes.

The decision to close Disneytoon comes at a moment of some turmoil at Disney’s animation operations after the recent news that longtime boss John Lasseter had been ousted from the helm of Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios.

It was unclear whether some 75 Disneytoon staffers would lose their jobs or be reassigned elsewhere in the Disney animation empire. Meredith Roberts had been GM of the Glendale, CA operation.
