Roma, A Quiet Place, Mission Impossible: Fallout and First Man Lead Feature Film Nominees; Vikings, Westworld, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, The Handmaid's Tale Are TV Standouts
The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) has announced its nominees for the 66th Annual Golden Reel Awards, honoring sound-editorial achievements in feature film, TV, animation and computer entertainment.
For those keeping score, the nominee slate does suggest that there are a handful of movies to beat when it comes to sound-editing honors, both at the Golden Reels and the Oscars. The MPSE nominated up to nine titles in each of its feature film categories, and four movies received three nominations each: Roma, A Quiet Place, Mission Impossible: Fallout and First Man were all nominated for Music Underscore, Dialogue/ADR, and Effects/Foley.
On the television side, History Channel’s Vikings mid-season finale episode “Moments of Vision” earned a robust three nominations on its own. Three more shows received three nominations each, but with the citations split among multiple episodes — HBO’s Westworld, Amazon’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
Recognizing outstanding achievement in sound editing across 23 categories, the MPSE Golden Reel Awards ceremony is slated for Sunday, February 17 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in downtown Los Angeles. As previously reported, the 2019 MPSE Filmmaker Award will be presented to director Antoine Fuqua and the 2019 MPSE Career Achievement Award will be bestowed upon sound supervisor Stephen H. Flick.
