May as well call it right here — with the release of this trailer Warner Bros. Pictures kicks off campaigning for the 2020 Oscar season. Based on the mammoth best-seller by Donna Tartt and featuring the impeccably handsome, steely-blue and golden-hued camerawork of Roger Deakins, ASC, WB is clearly positioning this as Prestige Cinema from BAFTA Award-winning director John Crowley of Brooklyn fame. Yet Tartt’s emotionally sprawling 773-page book is hardly a slam-dunk for adaptation; it will be interesting to see what Crowley, screenwriter Peter Straughan (who previously helped adapt Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy for director Tomas Alfredson) and editor Kelley Dixon, ACE (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) make of the material. (The music in this trailer? It’s reworked from the opening track from Perfume Genius’s 2017 album No Shape, “Otherside.”)
